A few weeks ago the sun took a vacation for about two weeks and we had nothing but rain. To keep from going stir crazy, I raided my fabric stash and got busy.
A couple of years ago I made some cute little pouches that I’ve since used for small makeup items, but I wanted to raise the bar and learn some new techniques, so I gave YouTube a look see.
I got hooked. Did you know you can learn ANYTHING on YouTube? Well, you can, and it’s totally and completely addicting.
Some of you have seen this photo on IG which represents my first batch of bags. For about three weeks I was functioning on no more than five hours of sleep. I was waking up around 6 and getting a bag started before the rest of the normal world woke up.
When I wasn’t making a bag, I was thinking about making one. I would go downstairs with the intent of starting a post, but inevitably I would detour to my sewing room and two hours later would still be there.
These days, I look at my sewing machine with lust in my eyes, and I see ordinary, everyday items as potential materials…a cute dinner napkin? Why not? A twill belt? Makes a great handle! It’s safe to say I have an addiction. Harmless, but an addiction nonetheless.
Speaking of fabrics, my friend sent me these squares because, well, I guess she doesn’t want me to leave my house. EVER.
What I’ve done is make about five bags using the same technique until I’ve gotten proficient at it (I’m a slow learner) and then moved on to something a bit different, rinse and repeat. Here’s one of my favorites, probably because I like black and white.
Isn’t this lining adorable? For the outside of the bag I cut the fabric and added a solid white to which I placed a ribbon on top. I love how the ribbon compliments the polka dot fabric.
And here’s my second batch of bags. The bag on the left is my latest effort. It’s quilted and as you can see has handles, but what you can’t see is the handles aren’t even. They’re even in length but not how they line up on the sides by about 1/2″. I know what I did wrong and won’t make that mistake again!
Here’s a few bags I made using dinner napkins. There are so many different options it’s mind boggling, and since you don’t need much fabric to make a bag they can be made fairly inexpensively, especially if you hit the sale bins. I love the cute black dachshunds which I was able to find in three colorways, but the white and black is my favorite.
I’ll be adding some embellishments such as tassels, pom poms or charms of some sort to dress them up.
I have no idea what I’m going to do with all these bags. Maybe try to sell them at a neighborhood tag sale in August. Some people have said to sell them on etsy, but there’s only a few that are, in my opinion, salable and worthy of that kind of venue. It’s hard to see in the photos, but I’ve made a LOT of mistakes. Almost every bag has an imperfection, but I’m ok with that because making mistakes is truly the best way to learn. My seam ripper and I are besties now.
When I’m not sewing, Fisherman and I have been taking advantage of the recent lovely weather we’ve been having. We took a short hike to a deserted quarry that has many of the original equipment used to help mine the granite. Here’s Fisherman being silly pretending he’s a grease monkey.
This was such a lovely spot and there were lots of teens taking turns jumping off the cliffs, ranging in height from around 25′ to 80′. They’re not suppose to be doing that, but as a teen it would be pretty hard to resist. As for me, I’ll just watch :).
Jacobs Pillow, which in case you didn’t know, is one of the country’s premier dance centers, offers numerous free performances throughout the summer, and we went this past Wednesday. People usually bring chairs and food, although there are plenty of both available at the venue. It’s a nice way to spend a couple of hours on a nice summer night. This photo below serves as the backdrop for the dancers. Pretty, isn’t it?
Last weekend we took the hour drive to Hartford, Ct. and enjoyed a lovely day by the river at their yearly Latin Festival. Lots of good music and food, and it’s always fun to people watch :).
And of course, the day wouldn’t be complete for Fisherman without a stop at the lake for an hour or two (or three) on the dock.
In other news…
I’m sure you’ve heard the expression ‘the silence is deafening’. That’s the way blogland feels lately. I know many of you who have blogs have felt it. Comments are down for just about everyone, and many, myself included, are posting less frequently. It is very different from the way it used to be five years ago when I started, but even more so for those of you who have blogged for seven years or longer. There’s no question Instagram has been a game changer, but I think there’s more to it.
It is said we change, sometimes significantly, every 5-7 years. If that’s true, it can explain why so many of us are looking elsewhere for creative expression. Some of us are turning our attention to writing a book, some of us are opening online shops and others are simply spending less time at their desks and more time doing things that bring them joy. Many bloggers, who either don’t want and/or need to monetize have decided blogging takes up more time than they’re willing to give, so they’ve either cut back or stopped completely. That’s not to say the love for blogging won’t return. Many times it does, but if it doesn’t, that’s ok. If it’s not fun, listen to your instincts and move on. Change is good, especially if it gets us off our butts and going for that walk at the quarry ;). I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Aside from making a few more bags (of course), our plans for the holiday weekend include a visit from friends with perhaps a drive to Tanglewood to see John Mellancamp (depends on the weather and what they want to do) and we hope to have the boys Monday and Tuesday. I doubt we’ll see any fireworks though. How about you? Do you have fireworks near you, or do you prefer to watch them on TV? Whatever you do, enjoy your long weekend!

You are multi talented, my friend, no doubt! Those bags are awesome, love that black and white one!!

I just love your bags! I was going to ask where you are selling them…not sure Etsy is the place because it is so saturated that to make a sale right now is crazy. You’d have to have at least 100 of them on there to get noticed! I am struggling with coming up with different and new blog content. Although my thrifted finds posts are really popular, they are just boring to me. I only post when I have enough to talk about and I am good with that. I do enjoy reading all those that I follow though. We are having crazy rainy weather here now so not sure what the 4th will bring for fireworks!

I love those bags! I have a thing for little bags and use them for everything. I think I have 3 in my purse right now. I’m sure you could make some money and make some people very excited if you did decide to sell them. As for the blogging thing, I hear you. My reason for posting/reading less is a combination of things: having a full-time stepchild, making my health and fitness a priority, and feeling like my house is mostly “done” until we sell it in a couple years. With that said, I don’t think I’ll ever give it completely up but will just post sporadically when I have time. It’s not something I do to make money, so I don’t feel pressure to keep it current.

Those pouches are adorable! We usually don’t go to the fireworks because of the crowds and trying to find a place to park. We have plans this weekend that involve buying mirrors for our bathrooms at the new house and just relaxing.

Those little bags are so cute! You’re lucky to be able to sew like that. I’ve never used a sewing machine before. That lake looks beautiful! It has been raining here almost daily all summer. ☹️So I know how bad it is to be cooped up in the house. I’ve noticed that blog commenting is down and I assume readership is too. I do think it’s because instagram is a lot easier. I admit to looking at instagram more myself! I’ve also noticed that give aways have almost gone away too. I’ve been blogging over 5 yrs and it has definitely changed.

Those bags are absolutely adorable Doreen! They truly are a feast for the eyes.
I can’t speak for anyone else but I’ve cut down on my blog because it is simply too hot to do much else. I hope you have a great holiday weekend
Rita C at Panoply says
Your bags are cute, Doreen! I love that style of small bag to wear as a wristlet (small loop at zipper end). My girls use them all the time when going out, and I find it puts way less pressure on the shoulder when shopping, flea marketing, etc.
I’ve never really blogged more than once or twice a week, still don’t use IG, but am content with my schedule and what I do (no monetization). Perhaps it’s just a summer lull….it’s definitely a time to be outside and do other things.
As for me, I’ll be hosting family on the 4th. Trying to decide I want to kick in my get up and go and pull out all the stops, or just take it easy. Easy sounds good right about now. 😉
Keep us posted on the house stuff…am curious. We’re off to FL soon for a short stay – going to the Keys this time (spur of the moment, cheap airfare thing).

I love your adorable bags Doreen, perfect way to be productive and creative on those rainy days. You’ve done a great job and I know you are enjoying the process. Always enjoy your out and about photos, love the one of you and Fisherman. Blogging always slows during the summer with school out and vacations. I think everyone is so busy it’s hard to find time. I blog when I have something of interest or something creative. Keeping up with everything something has to go to find time for blogging. I still love it! Looking forward to the fourth here, always fun with fireworks and BBQ. Happy Fourth to you and the Fisherman!

First, the blog thing. It has changed; I get very few comments and always from my same loyal friends. Which is perfectly fine as I’m not looking to make money off the blog. It definitely is a way to connect with likeminded people. Plus, with the wedding and purging and trying to get things ready at both places (not to mention my art), I just don’t have the time. I do tend to get more comments from posting it to Facebook.
I adore the bags…I’d love to purchase one of the dachshund ones for my sister. She’s carrying her jewelry in baggies when they go on a trip. Let me know what you want for one, ok?
Happy 4th! Enjoy your long weekend!
Hugs,
Cecilia

Doreen, what a beautiful post! I’m so glad I found you via my sweet friend Shirley. Your bags are super adorable, I love the ones with the dogs! Delightful.
I’ve been blogging for ten years and it has changed, but I still love it! It’s such a wonderful way to connect with friends and kindred spirits all over the world, isn’t it? Wishing you a beautiful 4 th.
tammy j says
I don’t blog anymore. . . now I just make really long comments. 😉
and since you asked me about planning your life … wait. what? you didn’t? oh well.
I just don’t see how you can LEAVE there!!! it’s paradise! it IS! you just don’t know it. you must just be bored by it!
and you and fisherman are so healthy and young and beautiful! if you don’t like the winters just take BAM to your favorite summer place! and when you get tired of that place just find another favorite place! that’s the beauty and fun of BAM’s!
and don’t worry about when you get “old.” I don’t think that’s really going to happen to you. and even if it does… knowing you…
you’ll land on your feet and something perfect for you will happen!
and in the meantime…
you literally have the best life in the world!
that little cabin is gorgeous. it could be left in the family after you’re making your little bags in heaven!
it would go on and become ‘the family cabin.’ it would remain dear to everyone you love and will be the best FAMILY heir loom!
what the heck does loom mean? what kind of word is that? I digress.
the family shared heir loom like those families in England do. only on a bit smaller scale. who needs 85 bedrooms and a moat ?
it’s plenty big enough for when they all have their own kids and grandkids. and the kids would look at a picture of you and say…
“this was a crazy beautiful fun lady. oh yeah. she’s also your great grandma! and this was her cabin!”
sadly she died at the age of 95 from an injury sustained on a pickle court.
you should really give that beloved little cabin a name you know.
AND…
your bags! holy crap girl! I am just blown away by your creativity!!! they are so beautiful and FUN! and USEFUL! the perfect art.
you could have a little artistic company. you could only sell them in the fall or spring at art festivals near the cabin.
THEN! …
in the dead of winter which you hate there … you would be in the hot places you love and you could sell them in a few art festivals there … key phrase in all of this … ONLY IF YOU WANT TO!
your little booth would look so cute and colorful! OMG! I can JUST SEE IT NOW!
you could name your wears… ” THAT OLD BAG!”
LOLOL! can’t you just see it? so colorful and FUN! and … make a little money on the side. that’s always nice.
and if nothing else it will keep you off the pickle courts. that’s a plus right there.
you could always take up skate boarding I guess… you know… to see if you can break a hip or something.
your life would change. if you keep the adorable cabin. and the biggest plus of all… you wouldn’t have to go through the stress of moving and selling and buying or building. you could just do what you love! make more faerie gardens! put in a hot tub! OH MY!
and if you want the cabin décor changed from the western theme… then just GO FOR IT!
we would all be hanging on edge just to see what you come up with! that in itself would be such fun for you! give it a new theme! we both love change. change is good.
but it doesn’t have to be as drastic as pulling up the old tent poles to be satisfying! LOLOL!
of course if you’re a Bedouin living in a dessert I’d have those poles pulled up before dawn. I’m OUTTA HERE RALPH.
well there.
I have spoken.
actually I see that I have written a whole post. or maybe even a novel.
maybe I should start a new blog. good grief Charlie Brown! I just had a great thought! maybe I’ll hang out my own shingle.
WILL PLAN YOUR LIFE. only 5 cents!
love you my darling bean
to the moon and back! XOXO♥

Tammy… that was a RIOT of a post! I laughed out loud many times! I haven’t met Doreen personally… we are blog friends, but everything you said sounds so true of her.. and the cabin… and staying there… and just heading south in the dead of winter…. and setting up her own little “shop” under her vintage awnings! How fun and funny. You SHOULD blog again! I love the name WILL PLAN YOUR LIFE ONLY 5 CENTS…. and love the name for Doreen’s bags! Still laughing…………. Marilyn

well. my gosh. thank you Marilyn!
don’t know if you’ll ever see this now. i’m kind of a hit and run type. I seldom re-visit my ramblings.
but Doreen mentioned to me you’d left a kind comment. or a reply to my reply. so I came by to thank you.
so heartening to see another person leave longish comments too. I don’t feel so alone!
we could start a club I guess. but I’m not a group type person. a lone long winded wolf really.
nice to meet you!

Love these adorable bags. You should think about selling them. Blogging has changed soooo much. I started about 6 years ago and see the changes too. IG seems to be the latest trend. I like IG but love writing and sharing on my blog. Life is busy for me right now but I do still enjoy blogging Hoping to get back into more with blogging soon. Have s wonderful holiday weekend.

I know how easy it is to get hooked on YouTube videos. That is how I learned to sew a box pouch too. I loved it. I am even following a video right now on how to sew a bench cushion. Great Job, Doreen. You should sell them. They are so cute. It is so addicting. Have a great Fourth of July!
Dewena says
First, my dear bag lady, I love them! The polka dot is very chic but I admit to loving the dachshunds, no surprise there. And I think this new obsession came at just the right time where you won’t be constantly thinking “sell, house, sell.” Actually though, with all of your many activities I don’t think you’ll ever fall into the trap of waiting around for a house to sell to get on with your life, not you!
Even when I was a teenager I would not have jumped off a cliff–didn’t my parents warn me about that? I even backed back down the ladder one time when I thought I could jump off the high dive at the swimming pool. But it is a beautiful place there.
I wonder what will replace IG ten years from now?

Good Morning Oh talented Friend!
I am impressed, truly I am! Such adorable bags and the print you have chosen is positively eye catching!
Of course I believe you should open up a little shop or sell them in a boutique. I just bet that when you get to where you are you going you’ll find an outlet them for, if you want to!
Obsessions, yes, that is how I have been with my gardening. The garden is tapering off now though as the subtle heat and humidity ease in and those rains nearly drowned everything!
Blogging for me has changed as well. You and I began at the same time with such fervor.
I am down to about once a week, and that is good with me. Now that Summer has settled in, I may be at my computer more…

I love your little bags and how creative you are with them. I’d be using them for everything…in my purse or even as a wristlet, makeup, craft supplies, to hold little toys for grandkids to tote around, etc. Sounds like you’ve had some fun outings, but those teens jumping off those high cliffs would make me very nervous to watch!
You are right about a lot of bloggers leaving and using IG more. I love IG, but blogging hasn’t gone the wayside for me yet. I enjoy the writing process itself; plus, I truly enjoy reading other blogs…learning, feeling inspired, making connections.
We don’t go to any fireworks for the Fourth of July. We just stay home and barbeque. Have a good holiday and rest of the week!

Your bags are adorable, Doreen. I love the dachshund fabric, too. Very cute. I have so much fabric in my little studio that it’s starting to smell like a fabric store in there. Seriously, it’s kind of annoying. I have to add more air fresheners. LOL I do a lot of work with fabric, though, so it’s necessary to have it all. I agree with you about Youtube. It’s one of the first places I go when I want to learn how to do something. I used to blog a lot more, but after burning out last year and taking a sabbatical I came back and decided 2 posts a week are my max. In the summer I would be happy to do just one post. The garden keeps me very busy. But I like the social interaction, so as long as I can I’ll do 2 posts per week. If it stops being fun. . .I’ll close it down. Life is too short to be tied to a computer. I agree about taking a walk, giving ourselves permission to live life rather than just write about it. Or pursue writing a book or other dream. I know a lot of people are going to IG, but I find it almost more time consuming than a blog. The hard thing for me is keeping things simple. . .this is what I’m striving for, though. The quarry is beautiful. Love those photos. Have a great 4th! xo

Hi Doreen. Your little bags are adorable. You really are talented. Love the choices of fabrics. I still enjoy blogging, but I only post once a week. I don’t know how anyone can find enough to write about every day. Sometimes I find it tedious, just trying to think up what to write about, but so far it’s fun for me so I will keep up awhile longer..Growing up in Santa Cruz, California, we always went to the beach and that meant sand and ocean. When we moved to Grass Valley, it turned into rocks and lakes. But everyone has a good time..Have a wonderful week..Judy

Your new obsession will, I’m certain, lead to others being obsessed with it, in that they will dish out the dollars to purchase as many of these pretty purses/small change bags/cosmetic pouches…their uses are endless…as their ‘previous’ pocket books allow!
Your adventures this season look like so much fun. You and Fisherman are always on the go, exploring, partying, pickle balling, that I find it hard to keep up with you – the adorable duo!
Trying to figure out what’s up in the bloggerhood lately is challenging in itself, never mind trying to post as often as I did when I first started back in 2012. It seems that visiting and commenting and partying at my favourite blogs this past year has become less frequent, for different reasons, but if I had to choose one, it would be priorities. I’m a little lazy about reinventing myself every so often at my age, preferring to just be ‘me’. If people get bored with that, no worries. Time is too precious to be preoccupied with such situations.
Shall I look for you in the next issue of Vogue, where you will be featured as the next up and coming designer, who used to be a lifestyle blogger?
Standing by…
xx

Hi Doreen, oh my goodness, your little bags are seriously so very cute! I love your fabric selections – and the little dogs are just adorable! Sewing is such a good way to sort through life – I love to sew when I have things I need to think about – but of course, that leads to those pesky little mistakes! Haha! You’ve shown us some beautiful scenery – that little nature pool where the kids jump is just so tranquil and pretty. I’ve never jumped off a cliff, but I have had plenty of dreams of doing just that. I always seem to grab hold of a branch to prevent me from falling……story of my life! Yes, blogging has slowed down for so many people and it always makes me sad to lose some good blog friends that way. I love to blog – it keeps me creative and allows me to ‘meet’ such talented and wonderful people and see places I may never get to visit. I have relatives on the other side of the country who enjoy keeping up with what’s going on here through my blog, too. I don’t make money on my blog, so I don’t feel any pressure as to how often to post – I just do it when the muse strikes. Sometimes that is often and sometimes not. I hope you keep on blogging! Hugs xo Karen

Hi Hon!
I agree that blogging has taken more of a backseat in my life – but I have personal family reasons currently for why that is right now. I still love it and try to give it some time when I’m able. Especially because I love the connections with friends like you and seeing what you’re up to – even if not always timely. Lol 😛
I just put up a post about our July celebrating yesterday.
And as for your bags – I completely think you could do an etsy thing if you wanted! But the tag sale idea is excellent and I have no doubt you’d sell out. You are amazing…that is all.

Oh wow Doreen! You have been busy for sure. All of your bags are cute. I think my favorite is the black and white polka dot too. I love black and white. Sounds like you have been enjoying life and that’s exactly what we are supposed to do…right? The blogging world does seem quieter than it used too. I know I don’t have as much time to blog these days but I still enjoy it occasionally. Speaking of…I’m hoping to get a post up tonight or tomorrow. Fingers crossed…lol!

Doreen.. I saved this post just so I could comment on it! It was such a hoot! I had to laugh (hard) about you looking at your sewing machine with lust in your eyes! that was so so funny.. and getting up early to work on your bags! All those fabric squares you got from your friend… wow….. now that will keep you busy for awhile! And had to laugh again at Tammy’s post.. what a kick! I replied to her post but don’t know if she’ll ever get it. Boy do I know HOW ADDICTIVE YouTube is! I’m addicted to it every night.. it’s my night time fix before I go to bed, and without it, I feel totally lost. Trouble is, I think I’ve watched just about EVERY video out there are paper crafts, shabby chic, making boxes, quilting projects, sewing little bags, etc. I keep searching for more. I need more! I subscribe to over 100 channels! Oh I’m a sad case……… and one gal who commented.. her idea of using the little bags for kids’ toys is perfect. Use some cute kiddie fabric (oh boy.. you get to go buy more!).. and make little toy bags. My sons both had one when they were little and carried those things everywhere with them….. just the right size for a few little trucks and cars, legos or little plastic figures. They could have one for every occasion! I’m also seeing many many uses for them. I got on a kick a few weeks ago of lined drawstring bags…. for gifts.. and then use the bag for carrying things. I have two. .one for my drawing pens and Zentangle pads (small ones), and one for crochet hooks that I keep inside my bigger knitting bag (yes I’m addicted to crochet too)!
Anyway…. I’ll not write a book here. Just wanted to tell you how hilariously funny your post was! also.. LOVE the photos of the lakes and ponds and quarry.. but I hope to God those kids have checked out what lies underneath the water.. that being a rock quarry there could be big rocks sticking up just a few feet below the surface. That’s scary.
You and the Fisherman have such great trips and adventures. I love following you and seeing your photos. I haven’t seen too much of a difference in blogs lately, other than a few have just shut down and quit writing because life has gotten busy. I don’t use IG and am afraid to get hooked on that, so I just don’t. I love photography and take pictures of everything, so I know I would be on there all the time, and I just don’t want to be. I post some of mine to Facebook (and sometimes my FB posts and blog posts are similar)…. and that’s enough for me. I do want to keep a life where I’m not glued to the computer or my (new) tablet all the time. I could see how having a tablet would make IG very addicting.
I love blogging because I love writing. I love the sharing of our lives and meeting new blog friends. And on my blog, I get to share my photography too which I love doing. My only problem is, I get overwhelmed sometimes with doing a blog post, because I have so much to say! am too wordy! have too many photos I want to share! or went somewhere I want to share and there’s just TOO MUCH STUFF I want to share, and I don’t know where to begin! Then I just keep putting it off. It’s been a month since I posted. I’ve taken two little trips.. take tons of photos, etc. and don’t know whether to put it all in one post (kind of like you do) or break it down and do several. I do like to post about every 2 weeks, but I’m not on any routine and just do it when the whim strikes me. I have a list of posts I want to do.. some from things I did 2 years ago!
I hope blogging continues,,,, and I don’t really like the ones that are so huge and commercial that I don’t feel a connection with the person writing it. I think those become too big, too commercial and too predictable and the same, over and over again. I like it for the personal connections and the friends I am making. I hope blogging continues and I like the fact that it doesn’t HAVE to be on a regular basis.. when I’m not trying to earn any money from doing it.. it’s just for pure pleasure and meeting new gals around the world… although… I’ve been concentrating more and more on following blogs of gals who are more local to me.. like within a one or two state area.. in the hopes that maybe someday I can actually meet them!
xoxoxo Marilyn

Love Love LOVE these pouches, Doreen! One is cuter than the next, but I am partial to the black and white in the first photo. Maybe you have a business in your future! As for the blogging thing, I thought the decrease in comments was just me – I’ve not been visiting as many blogs recently, as life has been hectic, and haven’t been linking up to blog parties (the few that are left). I’ve noticed that some bloggers have given up and moved to Instagram, but honestly, I like Instagram for the photos – not for long-winded prose. I used to feel about blogging like you feel about sewing your pouches — always thinking about the next post, the next idea. That’s changed, which I feel a little sad about. I do love writing, and being creative with photos, so I’ll keep at it, as long as I still find it fun.

Doreen, you’ve become a bagaddict, my friend. And I think it’s wonderful!! It’s all about finding what you love and letting it consume you, right? It does seem like so many of us were blogaddicts, but not so much any more. I still love blogging and honestly it has lead me further along the road in to finding what other things I want to do. Though IG is fun, it’s not the next place for me, but that’s just me. Your bags are so cute, my favorites are the dachsund ones, which reminds me, I used to work at a drapery house and have some fancy fabrics tucked away somewhere. One was of pugs. If I can find it, I’ll send it your way (if you want it.) Keep up the obsession, and have a great rest of your weekend!
