A short time ago I mentioned I was going to order a plate rack through Etsy. Well, here it is!
What do you think?
I’m really happy with it. It’s exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something simple and not too deep. If you want to store dinner plates on a kitchen rack, it really needs to be a minimum of 9″, but since I didn’t need the entire rack to store dinner plates I had the carpenter make it just 9″ on the bottom and gradually more shallow from the bottom to the top.
I gave it a quick stain treatment in Ipswich Pine, which is what we have on the framing around the windows.
When we purchased the house there was a kitchen cabinet there that stuck out like a sore thumb. After living with it for years, we finally removed it about a year ago. Just before the rack was installed, we had an art print in this space which looked fine, but I think kitchens should be functional above all else and I like the convenience of having plates near the sink and dining table, which is just to the right.
Please excuse the blown out windows in this next picture. I almost thought about not including this picture because of that, but I wanted to give you a view of what the space looks like now.
Enough of that.
A while back we removed some of the cabinet wood insets panels and installed some glass to break up all the wood in the kitchen. We added some lights to the insides recently. Here’s a nighttime picture.
Here’s a picture of the other cabinets we did the same treatment to. It wasn’t nighttime when this picture was taken so it’s difficult to get the full effect of the lights, but hopefully you can get an idea from the above picture.
That cabinet upgrade was one of the most cost effective diy projects we’ve ever done. If you want to give your kitchen a face lift without spending tons, check out how we did it here.
One more thing before I let you go :).
I’ve got a paint project that I’m starting involving this dresser.
I have to admit I’m a little nervous about it. Yes, I know it’s only paint, but it’s going to be time consuming to do, plus this dresser is actually fine just as it is so I hope I don’t mess it up. I may not be able to share it with you until December because after next weekend, we won’t be going back up to the cabin until December most likely. Oh no! I’ll have nothing to blog about!!
Be prepared for more recipes…

Doreen, that’s a great shelf. I love how your plates are right there, easy to access and pretty to see. Love the lights behind the glass too.
I don’t know how you’ll stand not going to your cabin for a whole month. It’d drive me crazy not to get to go! Anyway, I’m looking forward to what recipes you post as yours always look so yummy!
Hugs,
Cecilia

The plate rack is just beautiful, Doreen! What a smart idea going through Etsy. It just looks fantastic in your cabin. I know the dresser is going to turn out beautiful. I’m not a very experienced painter but half the talent goes into jumping right in!!

The plate rack adds a beautiful & functional piece to your lovely cabin kitchen. It’s really almost Shaker like in it’s simplicity. And the lights in the cabinets must be wonderful at night, showing the glass up so much better. Are those leaves in the pattern on the glass?
Doreen@househoneys says
Thank you so much Brenda and yes, those are leaf patterns. All I did was buy leaf stickers from Michael’s and placed them on the glass and sprayed with frosted spray and then removed the stickers. There’s a link for the how to in the post if you would like to get a step by step.

I love the plate rack! Your dishes look awesome on it and your glass panels and gorgeous! Was it very difficult to do and would you do it again? Good luck on the dresser!!~~Ang

It wasn’t difficult and yes I would definitely do it again. We actually did the corner cabinet (shown in photo) first then the other two several weeks later. The hardest part is cutting out the wood and if you’re not confident I would have a carpenter do it, but I’m pretty sure your hubs could handle it easily. 😉
