“What a subtle torture it would be to destroy all the mirrors in the world: where then could we look for reassurance of our identities”? Truman Capote
I’ve rarely met a mirror I couldn’t salvage. (Well, except those horrible mirrors in dressing rooms.) A mirror is a pretty quick and oftentimes inexpensive way to add some bling to a room, help create a feeling of spaciousness in an otherwise small space or simply fill up a lackluster wall as an alternative to artwork. Here are a few tips for using mirrors in some unexpected ways and for glamming up a plain mirror.
- Use mirrors as trays to display candles, jewelry, collections or even hors d’oeuvres.
- A door mirror makes a great table runner. If it has a frame, all the better. You can gild or spray paint it for added interest.
- For a fun project, pick up some wood letters that spell out a word or phrase of your choice. Spray paint them in silver metallic paint then glue/grout little mirrored tiles or rounds for an eye-catching display.
- Instead of hanging a mirror above a mantel, try leaning it against the wall for a more casual approach.
- If you are hanging a mirror, buy a lovely ribbon and suspend it from a glass knob.
- For a whimsical touch on an inexpensive closet mirror, write along the edge with a paint marker, “Hello Beautiful!”
If you come across an ornate mirror at a garage sale or flea market that is a gaudy gold color, don’t pass it up. Just a bit of paint and a dry brushing of furniture stain (or even shoe polish) will transform it into a shabby chic treasure.
Have you ever thought about layering mirrors? This takes a little bit of planning, but I think it’s a rich, elegant look for a bathroom, don’t you?

And sometimes simple is what is best.
Now about those dressing room mirrors. Will someone pleeeze reassure me they add 10 lbs and it’s not really me??

You have some great tips with using mirrors. I love the bathroom with the layered mirrors. I have no idea how you hang a mirror on top of another one though. Maybe liquid nails? I have an ornate mirror in my foyer that started out as the gilded gold you described. My sister painted it for me and gave it a unique distressed look that I love. It is now my favorite mirror! Thanks so much for stopping by and visiting me the other day too.

Hi Kelly, If you click on the ‘source’ link it will bring you to where you need to be for instructions on how to do it. It’s not as easy as it might seem. I don’t think liquid nails would do the trick. Those mirrors are pretty heavy! Thanks for stopping by!
