So you’re probably wondering what does a plate rack have to do with burlap.
Absolutely nothing.
I just wanted to tell you about some of my adventures and misadventures over the last few days in one post. 🙂
Last Wednesday I was going to Joanne’s. I don’t remember why I was going, but that seems to be a common thread lately for me. But who needs a reason. It’s sorta like hitting the shoe sales at Nordstrom’s when you already have 6 dozen pairs of Jimmy Choos. Who are we to judge?
So, of course I had to check out their website and grab a coupon and I saw they had a sale on burlap. Ten yards for $30.00, which was 40% off their regular price. It said the store I was going to had 3 left, but when I got there no one knew what I was talking about. Ugh.
Long story short…the Manager said he would honor the on-line deal. He said he would give me 10 yards of $5.99 yard burlap for $2.99 a yard. That was actually better than the on-line deal but who’s complaining.
BUT
there didn’t seem to be any burlap for $5.99. Just $3.99 and then it jumped to $9.99-$16.99. Well, suddenly the $2.99 a yard didn’t seem so enticing, but guess what? He said I could have any one of them for that price!
I hit the burlap jackpot!
I won’t get into how the cashier had no idea what I was talking about and the hassle that ensued. All I care about is I walked out of Joanne’s with 10 yards of burlap that was ticketed at $9.99 a yard (yup, I know. I should have grabbed the $16.99 one) for $30.00. The original on-line discount was 40% off, and this was 70%.
It’s a dark brown metallic burlap.
But guess what?
I have NO idea what I’m going to do with it. Do you think I’ve been checking out ‘burlap projects’ on Pinterest? Hummmmm????
And I still can’t remember why I went to Joanne’s in the first place.
Now about that plate rack.
You see that big ol’ honkin’ microwave between the windows? It’s always bothered me. It’s too big. We don’t need a microwave that big, so we got rid of it and bought a smaller one and put it in the cabinet above the wall ovens on the left. This picture was taken just after we emptied out the cabinet so excuse the mess por favor.
I moved some wall art around and this is the way it looks now. Not terrible, but whoever came up with the phrase ‘form follows function’ was probably thinking about kitchens, and I agree. I hate wasted space.
I’ve been wanting some kind of plate rack for a while so I started looking on eBay, Amazon, and Overstock but nothing worked. I finally found someone on Etsy that will do custom designs. I spent a couple of hours this weekend mapping out what I want. At first I was seriously considering putting the rack between the windows where the microwave was. That’s a wider space and would give us the most storage, but after thinking about it…
and thinking about it…
and thinking about it…
I decided to get something very, very simple and put it to the right of the sink. I think it would look less ‘busy’ that way, since the pot rack is right there. Something just for dessert/salad plates, bowls and mugs. That way it won’t have to be too deep. Fisherman could probably build one, but I want it fairly quickly and since we’re just there on weekends I’m going to order it from Etsy.
Although I really like this one…

the depth is 10″ and I don’t want anything that deep. I’m thinking 7″ at the most, which would accommodate our salad plates which are 8″ (the plates usually stick out a bit).
My only thought now is whether I will want it to be black to match the accents in the kitchen or natural. I’m leaning toward natural because some of my accessories are red and if I put one of them on the rack it might look too ‘Halloweeney’. Well, it is that time of year so we’ll see.
Usually on Sunday nights after coming home from the cabin I put together a post and it’s good to go on Monday. I’m not one to plan weeks or even days ahead with my posts. I used to do that when I first started blogging a year and a half ago, but now I fly by the seat of my pants. For the first time in I don’t know how long, I decided not to write a post on Sunday night. Instead, I was diligently working on creating a page with thumbnails of recipes and I have to say, I’m so proud of myself for doing it. HTML does not come easy for me. At all. And it took me way too long to do it. But I did it!
Go ahead and click on ‘Recipes’ in the navigation bar and you’ll see for yourself. In case you’re wondering, I would have no objection whatsoever if you decided to pick up a pair of Jimmy Choos for me to celebrate my accomplishment.
I’m a size 7.5.

Doreen, I was laughing so hard reading this, because if I had a dollar for every time I went to the craft store and came home without what I originally went to get, I would be rich! I’m easily craft distracted! 🙂 You scored big time with that burlap, though I can imagine the hassle! Looking forward to seeing what you do the burlap – and the plate rack! I wish I had the wall space for one! Have a great Tuesday!

HI Doreen,
You really scored with the burlap, and I can’t wait to see what you do with it! I think hanging a plate rack is a great idea. I have really been wanting one of those but I don’t think there’s any room in our tiny kitchen. Hope you are enjoying this beautiful fall weather!

Good for you on the burlap deal! I’m sure you will come up with something…how about some table runners or a swag for a window? I bought 2 yards of bleached burlap over a year ago and I keep using snippets here and there.
The plate rack you pictured is gorgeous! You have the perfect space for one, too. I can’t wait to see what you choose.
I am so behind on writing posts and visiting. I have never written a post and saved it to publish later, maybe I should try that. I am short on time today but I’m sure people are thinking I dropped dead!
XO,

Lol Jane! Everyone needs a break now and then. We will all be here when you’re back in the saddle.:)
I thought about a runner, etc., but the burlap is dark and it won’t show up in my decor! Why did I get it you might ask? Probably the same reason I can’t remember why I went to Joanne’s in the first place. I’m losing it.
I’ve been emailing with the guy from etsy and hopefully we wil come up with a design soon and with any luck I will have it by month’s end.

What a great deal, good for you girl. I really love the burlap you chose, so pretty. I think we all go to the craft stores and don’t really know why we are there. It is amazing though that I always seem to come back with tons of stuff, LOL!

Hey now. I thought I was going to see a plate rack that you actually bought?! Tease. I totally get it about forgetting why you went somewhere. I always forget why I went into the kitchen. I just end up eating something since I’m there. I haven’t blogged in over a week and I feel like a total rebel. No blog-plan for me.

I think your ‘rebelness’ is what makes you so endearing Andi. 😉
And I haven’t been called a tease since high school…but that’s another story for another day.
