You would think buying kitchen curtains would be easy. Think again.
The kitchen in our rental, well, let’s just say I call it our ‘vanilla’ kitchen. I like it though. The cabinets are the cheapest kind you can buy, but there are plenty of them. The kitchen is 16×14 which is pretty spacious for a house that is only 1250 sq. ft. The kitchen has two windows, which face a wooded area and a partial view of our garage, so privacy isn’t a huge issue. But sometimes in the morning the light is glaring and at night it felt weird. Like someone was out there in the woods peeking in. Plus, the room needs some color. Badly.
So I looked for simple cafe curtains because I wanted to use only tension rods as hardware so we wouldn’t have to make holes. I looked in Target, BB&Beyond, KMart and on line. None of the retailers carried them believe it or not. I saw a few I liked on line but they were quite pricey.
So I did the unthinkable. I went to WalMart. I despise that store. True, some are better than others, but trust me on this. The one where we live is not one of them.
They only had one pair of curtains available which I didn’t like much, but bought them anyway. I figured if I went to all the trouble of dealing with the parking and the less than pleasant shopping experience, I was damned if I was leaving empty handed. So here’s what I bought.
Pretty pathetic for someone that was looking to bring color into a space, wouldn’t you say??! I knew I didn’t want to keep them. So I decided making them was the way to go, so off I went to Joanne’s where I spotted this fabric on a bolt overhead:
Some of you may know that sometimes when you’re in a fabric store like Joanne’s and there are lots of fabrics on bolts, they have a crank that you turn to bring the bolt’s around so you can get a better look at what you’re interested in. Since this fabric was on the tippy top, I turned the crank to do just that. Well, the crank malfunctioned and started to spin out of control, bringing down yards and yards of fabric into the aisle until the entire bolt was empty. We’re talking at least 20 yards here folks. I was glad another woman was in the aisle with me in case the employees thought I did something amiss.
I bought what I needed and hightailed it out of there.
I edged it with some pom pom trim and tied it with a ribbon secured with a cup hook. I love this fabric. The colors, the textures, the vintage feel. It was almost worth the trip to WalMart and the embarrassment of 20 yards of fabric falling on me to get.
Anyone interested in some vomit green cafe curtains?

I’m so sorry but I don’t remember Christa! I purchased it at Joanne’s. I think it’s a waverly fabric but I’m not sure.
