Ribbon or fabric flowers are soooooo easy to make, not to mention fun to do. They can add a cute embellishment to just about anything you want, from clothing to craft projects.
Most often you will see single colored flowers, but you can use two different colors for added interest and depth and it’s just as easy to pull off as using one color.
For this first flower, I used a piece of red ribbon about 1/2″ thick for the smaller piece and I cut up an old pillow cover into strips of about an inch or so for the base. The lengths are around 16″, but you can make them nearly any length you want. Just don’t get too crazy or else you’ll be dealing with too much fabric at the end.
Before beginning, it’s a good idea to have two needles ready to go threaded with your thread of choice. One needle will need to be long enough to complete the first step, the other needle about half the length. I’ll explain why in a second.
Step 1
Lay your smaller piece on top of your larger piece. You can place it any which way you want, but the final results will look different depending on what kind of placement you opt to do.
Step 2
Using thread in the same color (I used white for demonstration purposes) create a running stitch of long stitches. Gently pull each end until it looks something like this.
Step 3
Cut the end threads, and begin rolling your ribbon, making it as tight or as loose as you want. I typically like to start out a bit tighter and loosen things up toward the end. Now here’s where the thread comes in handy. About half way, bring your thread through the bottom to secure it so it won’t unravel. When you’re finished rolling, do it again. Sorry I don’t have a picture of this but it’s hard to thread something and take a picture at the same time!
Here’s another flower using just a ribbon that’s about 2″ thick. The technique is slightly different but easy nonetheless.
Step 1
Start out the same way but this time after you run your thread you’re going to fold it in half lengthwise, basically creating a double thickness of fabric. Iron if desired. (Sorry I don’t have any pictures of this step).
Step 2
From here on in, it’s the same technique as the first ribbon.
Here’s a not so great picture of another flower I made using the red ribbon in a slightly different spot on the white fabric. Different placements give different effects.
Like I said, super easy and fun to do!

How cute those are, Doreen! I’ve been wanting to make some burlap roses…I’m loving the ribbon though. 🙂
