I love white and I love glitter. Put the two together and I’m sold. This project is super easy, super fun and…super messy! Yup, you need to be prepared for that. No matter how hard you try, this stuff will get on your floors so plan to do some vacuuming when you’re done. So you may as well get the kids involved. They’ll love it.
I purchased some paper mache houses from Hobby Lobby on-line. You could use whatever type house you want, as long as it’s paintable. The nice part about this project is it’s really versatile and you could use lots of different decorations. I choose to keep it fairly simple and let the glitter speak for itself, but you could add miniature elements like wreaths, reindeer…whatever, just have fun!
Start out and paint the houses in whatever color you choose. I used some white paint I had laying around.
I picked up some cute victorian stickers at Michael’s that I thought would make nice embellishments, and I also bought some rock candy stirrers at a candy store. I liked the turquoise color and figured I might use them as trees. I also bought a little sparkly hair beret for $1.50.
After painting the houses and letting them dry, I put some glue on the roofs and applied silver glitter. Then I put some of the stickers on, glued the rest of the houses and applied some subtle white glitter. Oh, and that rock candy that was going to be a tree? I decided to trim out the roof edge instead. I really like how it came out!
I wasn’t thrilled with having all the windows/doors on all the houses empty, so I used some silver ribbon which I cut to size and hot glued them from the inside. And there’s the hair beret, on top of the door.
I was initially thinking of putting the houses on the now famous piano, but it wasn’t deep enough so I decided the hearth was a pretty good place. I may move them to the mantel because we won’t be able to use the fireplace otherwise, but for now it’s fine. We’re only here on weekends, and this is about the only decorating I’m doing for this space.
I think if you really want to go all out, it would be a great idea to put some lights inside the houses, just like a real Christmas Village scene. That would look sooooo pretty!
Does this scene make you want a hot chocolate while listening to Johnny Mathis ;).
I hope you give this craft project a try. Just make sure your vacuum is working.
