I couldn’t think of doing this organizing series without talking about the kitchen. Whether you cook or not, the kitchen invariably is a place you spend a fair amount of time in, so it makes sense to plan your space accordingly. Here are a few items and ideas I thought would be helpful.
This is an idea I’m definitely going to ask Fisherman to do when we redo our pantry. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the back of the door is prime real estate and should NOT be wasted.
These next few ideas I found on Martha’s site. Some of them we’ve actually utilized, like this next one and the pull out tray. We did this one at the cabin a few years ago when we renovated the basement. It’s simply pvc piping cut to size and glued and/or nailed together.
Do you use an iPad sometimes to read recipes while you’re cooking?
I always say, sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.
I’ve utilized this idea in our kitchen for items that are a bit tall. It’s simply a baking pan that can be pulled out to have better access to the things in the back. This would work for deep cabinets too. It’s a LOT less expensive than installing custom pull-outs.
I often get asked how I stay so organized. Maybe some people are just organized by nature. Maybe you can teach yourself to be organized. I’ve been this way as long as I can remember. If I don’t make my bed in the morning, you can assume I’m lying in it, comatose. Once my bed is made, all is right with the world.
- When something comes into your home, whether it’s bills, groceries, whatever. Put them away immediately.
- When clothing is pulled from the dryer, put them away then and there
- When you finish eating, take care of the dishes right away. At the very least, put the dishes in the sink to soak. At least they’re not in plain sight.
- Look at things differently. We don’t have to have closed cabinets entirely in our kitchens. Think about open shelves for things you use often. This forces you to keep more organized too.
- Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, respect and honor your home. Don’t take it for granted. If nothing else, I hope you can take this thought to heart. Take care of your home, and it will take care of you.
