As you may have seen a couple of weeks ago in this post, Vermont is gorgeous in the Fall, but like most of New England this time of year, we’re lucky to have spectacular beauty right in our own back yards so last week we took a short drive to some of my favorite spots.
Visible just around a bend, this vista is one of my all time favorites.
Just up the road is this farm, complete with horses, chickens and sheep…
and they’re happy to come by and say hello!
I found this spot quite by accident a couple of months ago when some road work was being done and we were detoured to a side road.
Just behind me when I took this picture is a house that sits on a hill. Imagine having this view!
Peak was quite late this year. I went out this morning and noticed some trees were even more intense in color than last week, but I didn’t take any pictures.
There’s a small gorge that requires a very short walk to get to, and we decided to see how it was fairing. Shortly after arriving these two dogs came into the gorge from the other side and were trying to reach us. They actually went into the water, much to their owners chagrin!
In spite of the lack of rain we’ve had, there was some water flowing. Over the last two months, I think it’s rained once.
I took these next shots over Columbus weekend. I was taken with this handmade truck! What a cool diy project!
Every year there’s a small harvest fair that hosts a scarecrow contest. There were many more that were equally as creative as these.
Remember Cousin It?
I’ll leave you with the quintessential shot of a New England church.
In other news…
Even though it’s the end of October, there are many trees that are just now peaking. I don’t know if I’m more aware of the colors this year because I’m taking so many pictures, but they do seem to be even more intense than I remember. How is it where you live?
We went to Rhode Island this weekend with ‘BAM‘, and I’m happy to say we had almost no issues whatsoever! (Notice I said ‘almost’, but nothing that can’t be fixed.) Friday night we watched a movie called ‘The Long Long Trailer’ starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. It was hysterical, and I loved their vintage 40′ trailer! The movie was made in 1953, so if you like vintage trailers, or if you just love Lucy and Desi, here’s a link to the movie trailer.

Okay, House Honey, I was about to call it a night, (cannot see straight as we speak, so excuse the spelling silliness should there be any!), when I took a last look at my sidebar and thought it was strange that you had not posted in a few days. So, I thought I’d better stop by and see where you had disappeared to, and I’m glad I did, since I just discovered that for some uncanny reason, your blog is not loading in my blog roll!
Now, I just dropped by to inform you that you are living in a painting, but, you probably know that already, seeing as you are surrounded by so much colour. Still, thought I should remind you. Now, I hope I can sleep soundly, and hopefully transport myself to that beautiful farm, if only in my dreams…
‘Night.

Love your pictures! I’m not sure what kind of Fall color we will get – it got horribly dry and a lot of trees have already turned brown and dropped their leaves. We have, thankfully, finally gotten some rain. We’ll see if the rest of the trees turn color, but it won’t be for a few weeks yet. Thanks for sharing! Have a good week!
Hugs,
Cecilia

Doreen one picture is more beautiful than the other. Love the horse, you got a good close-up. Horses scare me a bit they are so big and strong. What a cute sheep and the picture of the water was majestic. Thanks for sharing these beauties.

I loved going along on your beautiful fall tour! The leaves are still on the trees here in Texas and they are a faded green with perhaps a bit of yellow in a few. No color like you have! Next fall Louis Dean and I are taking the train to New England to see the fall folliage. It will be so much fun!! He’s never been! I used to travel up there every other year – in my other life! You would never really believe all the beautiful colors if you haven’t seen them!!
Thank you for sharing your fall with all of us!!!

i own that movie and love it! collecting rocks… and the backing into the relative’s driveway… oh…
so many scenes that i can think of and dissolve into happy laughter! and like you. I LOVE that 50’s trailer!!!
i could live in it in a … pardon the expression… new york minute!!!
thank you for all the beautiful autumn posts.
not a leaf has even turned here. it may be like last season and the one before that…
they stayed green. then due to no rain… and contstant HEAT. they turned brown. then with the first freeze and high wind … simply blew away… or stayed on the trees. which isn’t really good for the trees. especially come springtime.
it’s a bit scary really.
shows a real climate change. one you’re reading about … but hoping isn’t applying to you.
i love your travels!!! and always the beautiful pictures you share with us!
THANK YOU!

Well, I’m back and now just finished catching up with you. Do you ever sit still, woman? lol I don’t blame you though, because it’s absolutely gorgeous there and also on all your travels.
I know you know I’d love that movie and probably that I’d own it 😉 I think my favorite seen is when she’s trying to make dinner while he’s driving. Cracked. Me. Up.
Missed you lady 🙂

Doreen, Autumn around your town is beautiful. These are awesome pictures. I tried to leave a comment on your table setting up above, but it wouldn’t allow me to. These nature pictures just made my heart sing. Spending time in nature is one of my favorite things to do. These horse pictures are delightful, you got so close to them. : ) Horses are so special, and to see them up this close is magical. I wanted to ask you how you get your pictures so big? I’ve asked a few people, but they haven’t gotten back to me on it. Go figure. Is it because you don’t have any side bars, and it allows you to take bigger pictures? I love that last picture of the church and the trees of orange and golden colors. I wish I could see Autumn in New England. It is just gorgeous, and it sounds like you are taking it all in.

Hi Sheri,
That’s too bad that no one has gotten back to you about the pictures. I am on WordPress and I know you’re on Blogger so I’m afraid I can’t be too much help. I do know in Blogger you have the option of picture size like ‘small’ ‘medium’ ‘large’, but I don’t know exactly how large in terms of pixels that is. My pictures are 600 pixels wide and I think I can go to 700. Lots of times it depends on your theme also. I do have a sidebar (that’s where my pic is as well as favorite posts) but if I didn’t I think I would have over 1000 pixels, but I’m not sure.
The reason you couldn’t comment on that post is because I turn off comments on my posts that are older than 90 days. It really helps cut down on spam a LOT, as bots typically target old posts.
May I suggest you contact Brenda at CLH and ask her about the pictures? She’s on Blogger and uses large pics too and I KNOW she will be happy to help.

Your pictures are gorgeous!! The colors, and the one with the horse running—it almost looks like it’s in motion! What a heavenly place you live in. What proximity are you to NYC?

Thanks Jane! We are just under three hours from Manhattan…more if you need to park your car once you get there ;).

Goegeous pictures Doreen! We don’t have a very colorful fall here in Florida but that’s ok! At least I can enjoy it through your eyes and the eyes of others. That church setting is just beautiful! Hope you enjoy the rest of your week.

Doreen,
Poppy summed this up-you live in a painting! Do you awake each morning in complete awe of the beauty that surrounds you?
Girl, you live in Heaven this time of the year, and to think that your gorgeous log cabin is placed right in the middle of all of this stunning beauty!
My color…do you really want to know? How about crunchy leaves from oak trees that are rustic brown and withered gray?
Seriously, I live in Texas and we go from blazing heat to bleached brown. Lovely isn’t it?
Gotta love living here though, cuz we do have football!

That’s one of my favorite movies!!!!! I was always a fan of Lucille Ball, it was so sad when she passed away. What gorgeous photos – aren’t we lucky to live in such beautiful areas?
Magali@TheLittleWhiteHouse says
The pictures are amazing. The leaves here didn’t turn before last week and as it’s been raining a lot since, I haven’t even taken a descent picture yet!
carrie@northwoods scrapbook says
Oh the gorgeous photos with the views, vistas, horses, sheep, chickens, barn, color – just idyllic!! You truly live in an incredibly beautiful area Doreen. Thanks so much for sharing it with me…almost as good as hiking around with you and seeing it in person. 😉 It’s getting much more bare around here. Still a few trees that are glowing, but definitely past peak.
That movie looks like something right up my alley! May have to check that out. Blessings on the rest of your week my Dear Friend!! xoxo

What a horsewhisperer you are, Doreen! I think they paid you a big compliment by coming up to you. Your neighborhood is amazing!
I remember renting The Long Long Trailer back when the boys were in high school for pizza night. They thought they’d be bored but we all laughed so much and it became one of our favorites. I loved the way the women dressed then.
Last picture is certainly how I think of New England.

Hi Doreen,
WOW! Are you lucky to see so much beauty where you live. I love the color of the leaves on the trees. The barns, horses, and sheep are so nice. Thanks for sharing this with us as I enjoyed your photos!
I hope you are having a nice week. Wishing you a nice week and Happy Halloween!!

More beautiful pics! I wish it looked like that here. We’ve had SO much rain that it is making our Fall a bit messy and wet. All of the fallen leaves are stuck to the ground. I loved the pictures of the horses and sheep in the pastures.
Deb @ Frugal Little Bungalow says
That farm and the horses and the gorgeous fall scenery !! Loved every photo and the funny scarecrow shots as well…
as to peak, the rule of thumb always was the 2nd-3rd week in PA but it’s been very late this year as well.
We recently had two days of rain and it’s quite windy now so the leaves are dropping quickly.
