Whooo Hoooo! I’m an Anne Sloan virgin NO MORE! Unless you’ve been living under a rock in the blogosphere, you know everyone has been shouting the virtues of Anne Sloan paint for quite some time. I finally had the opportunity to try this paint out for myself when I spotted this cute little dresser at a garage sale and snapped it up for $20. I was orginally going to use it in one of the bedrooms at our cabin, but everyone told me it looked good right where I happened to place it to ‘get it out of the way’ while I was working on other things in the craft room. And I have to say I agree, so it’s actually in our basement/family room at the cabin.
It’s not an elaborate dresser by any means, but what I like about it is it’s very narrow and it has 10 drawers! And…none of them are too deep. Ask any organizer worth their salt and they will tell you deep drawers are the black holes of the design world.
I wanted a barn red finish, but not too dark, so I got the Emperor’s Silk color and a small jar of Graphite and used just five teaspoons to darken the red. After two coats, I put on a coat of clear wax, then a coat of the dark wax. Both items came with the kit which also included some brushes both for applying the paint and the wax. I have to admit I didn’t really need the wax brushes for this particular project because this dresser doesn’t have any knooks and crannies. I just used lint free clothes from old sheets.
My goal was to match the sexy cowgirl’s pants, and I think I achieved just that! I also had some golden/yellow paint from another project and painted the sides of the drawers on the inside to match her coat. Yeah, I guess I had a lot of time on my hands that day :).
I wasn’t quite sure what to do about the drawer pulls. I really like what unique pulls add to a piece, but they can be pricey and I not only didn’t want to spend too much, but I didn’t want to take the time to search for them. I originally painted the knobs with the Graphite, but it ended up looking like Bozo the Clown in reverse, so I mixed the Graphite with some red and scuffed it up a bit. I think they look just fine (for now).
Did I mention I really like this paint? I put two full coats on the dresser, and used only about 1/8 of the quart sized container! I’M. NOT. KIDDING. You could probably paint a whole house with just a quart of this stuff! But I’m thinking instead of our house 😉 maybe a rocking chair I have that could use a facelift, and maybe an oak vanity that I HATE in one of our cabin bathrooms, and maybe an armoire in one of our bedrooms…

Doreen, you did a beautiful job on that dresser. I love ASCP and use it all the time. It does seem to last a really long time. You’ll find that you will become obsessed with painting everything with it. I am. lol I would love for you to share this at my party “Totally Transformed Tuesday” @ pjhdesignsoneofakind.blogspot.com Have a wonderful day. Peggy 🙂

Nice job on the dresser. I’m a new ASCP fan and am starting to redo my whole bedroom set with it. If you have a Hobby Lobby near you check them out for knobs. They are always 50% off and have a big selection. I needed drawer pulls and couldn’t find the right size so I started buying them one at a time at flea markets and am using 7 different pulls on my chest of drawers.

Thank you everyone! And Stephanie, that’s a great suggestion! I don’t have a Hobby Lobby, but I do have a Michael’s and A.I. Friedman which is not exactly ‘crafty’ but more ‘artsy’. I’m thinking of doing something a bit different…maybe finding a way to put brooches on the knobs? Hummmm…I guess I just showed my age by using the word brooch, but if I said ‘pin’ you’d think I was talking about pinterest. 😉
Thanks for visiting and for the suggestion. It’s something to consider for sure.

Your red dresser is great and would fit right in at my house.
I attempted a little table earlier this month and love the way it turned out. Today I will be in a town with an ASCP distributor so I am picking up a white and a yellow for 2 more projects. It was so easy.
