Last week I showed you what our screened-in porch looked like. I had ordered a slipcover and a rug, and I was thrilled they both arrived in just a couple of days so we were able to bring them up to the cabin this past weekend. Here’s a quick look at the porch, and I have to say I really, really like the rug! I’m so glad I decided not to go with the rugs that were mostly red. I think it would have gotten lost plus I like the way this rug picks up on some existing colors.
Now for the slipcover. Yes, I like that too, and I’m definitely glad I bought it, but here’s what the package looked like upon arrival…
That mark that you see is not on the plastic, but on the cover itself.
Now here’s the thing. The company tells you that the covers they carry have been returned to them by customers who decided not to keep them. They also tell you the covers are in ‘like new’ condition. When I saw the cover was dirty, I didn’t panic because it’s the kind of mark that can come off easily, plus I didn’t know where it would fall on the cover or even if it would be visible. As it turned out, once we had the cover on, I couldn’t even find the dirt mark anymore.
When I was looking at the instructions for putting the cover on, I noticed it said it was a Pottery Barn cover. That came as a complete shock to me. I don’t know how UglySofa works, but for $50.00 including shipping I have a high quality slipcover that looks great. In spite of the dirt mark, I would highly recommend you give them a try if you’re in the market for a slipcover. In case you’re wondering, they’re not an affiliate and I get nothing if you purchase from them. I just want to share this resource with you all.
The slipcover is not as yellow as I thought it would be, but it’s perfectly fine. It goes well with the rug, and the space is really starting to come together.
For some of the items I shopped the house. The trunk was something we used for our shoes as you come into the house, but I like the way it looks on the porch. The color of the wood is just about perfect for the space. It’s staying right where it is unless I can find something I like better. I decided to keep the side table for now, but that’s subject to change too.
Notice the top of the trunk has a vase in some pictures but not in others. I just couldn’t help myself and was piddling around, picked some flowers from the garden and thought they brightened up the porch a bit. I know you do that too, right?
I’m really liking red and yellow these days. The dark wood of the cabin really calls for rich, saturated colors and they fit the bill.
Here’s a quick look at the before/after. The biggest impact came from changing out the rug, but replacing the cocktail table and adding some bright accessories contributed a lot as well.
So what’s next for this space you ask? Definitely some drapes. I spent some time the other night looking for outdoor drapes and might have a couple of options. If you’ve checked out some recently you know how expensive they can be. Not only will it be for the enclosed area, but the unenclosed area as well, so we’re talking a LOT of fabric folks! Hardware is no joke either, but there are less expensive options for those of us willing to do the work. I’m just not sure I want to right now. In the summer, I don’t want to be tied to my sewing machine (and I’m not convinced I want drop cloths either) and I’m not the world’s most patient person so I’m not sure what I’m going to do but I’ll come up with something. I sorta have an idea but I’m not sure yet. To be continued…

Oh Doreen, it turned out FABULOUS!!!! (and yes, I am screaming at the screen!) LOL!! I love it!! The rug choice was perfect and the slipcover is so versatile, you can change pillows and such as your taste changes! I can’t wait to see what you decide on the curtains! I know it will be fabulous as well! Excellent job!~~Angela
p.s. I’ll be visiting soon! LOL!!
Doreen Sargente says
LOL Angela! You better (visit, that is)! And guess what??!! Tomorrow, the deck is being started!! I’m sooooo excited!! I’m heading up tomorrow for five days. I need to start my daughter’s bouquet (click on ‘Meet Chuckie’ in the sidebar and you’ll see what I mean). Maybe get some sewing done too…or maybe I’ll just hang by the lake and read Brenda’s book suggestion. Yeah, that’s the ticket…

Doreen, the porch looks awesome! I love the rug. You’re absolutely right, a red rug over the red floor would not have looked right at all. This rug is perfect. The trunk is definitely a keeper, and I love the red vase and beautiful yellow flowers. I was mortified when I saw the condition the slipcover came in. I’m glad it looked worse than it actually was, and $50.00 for a pottery Barn slipcover is amazing! The neutral color of the rug and slipcover balances out the room and makes it look more spacious. The red, yellow and green accessories add just the right sensations on the eye. The porch looks so cozy and inviting. I love it!

Thanks so much Vashti! I always love your insights and sweet comments :).
There’s still more changes to come…*hint* I kinda went pillow crazy yesterday at HomeGoods lol. I won’t be posting about the porch again until it’s done which could take a while because some sewing might be involved. :/
Thanks for stopping by and hope to,see you at today’s hop!

Doreen, your porch looks fabulous…so colorful! I like red and yellow together, too, and I think you did really well with the rug choice. The slipcover is perfect! I didn’t know you had a real log cabin!! That’s awesome, I can’t wait to see more.
We have a covered patio that get’s bright sun in the mid afternoon. I thought about curtains but they didn’t suit the style of our house. We opted for bamboo blinds from Home Depot. Very inexpensive and cut to order. I love the natural look, but I also think curtains are so pretty. Just thought I’d pass that on.
XO,
Jane

The porch is stunning Doreen. I love the rug and I would have panicked about the slipcover but it goes to show me DON’T always panic.
