Wood, wood, everywhere! So what’s a girl to do?? I’ll tell you what. Break out a can of spray paint, tape, and some glitzy gold paint and get to work.
The first step is deciding how much of the bowl you want to leave natural and how much you want to paint. For aesthetics, it’s best not to make it 50/50. In my case, I wanted just a little less ‘painted’ than natural. Tape where you want the paint to end and cover the part of the bowl (I used newspaper. Sorry, no photos of that) that you want to remain natural. For this bowl I used a high gloss paint, which I think works best, but it’s a personal choice. Spray one thin coat, let dry and repeat.
After letting it dry, I decided how wide I wanted my stripe to be and taped accordingly. It’s hard to mess this up, so just eyeball it.
I sprayed the entire side of the bowl, front and back, in the first step, but decided not to extend the stripe all the way around the back. Again, up to you, but I’m a bit lazy sometimes 🙂
Well, I guess I’m not THAT lazy, because I couldn’t stop at just one stripe. After letting the first one dry, I did a couple more. The possible configurations are almost endless. I put a coat of MMS ‘Tough Coat’ on as a last step, but that’s totally optional.
I got these orbs a couple of years ago at Pier1, and they’re so versatile! I heard they may be going out of business, but I hope that’s just a rumor. I was in their store last week and it certainly didn’t look like a place that was in financial trouble. So much eye candy!
In other news…
I hope you’re not sick of hearing about the hallway, because I’ve got one more set of pics to show you. I painted the doors, but before we get to that here’s a shot I found of the hallway from around 4 years ago, before we lived here full time. Pretty basic, huh?
Doesn’t it look like that painting is of snow shoes? It’s just the reflection from across the hall.
I ran out of the ASCP so I used some Milk Paint. The colors were Linen, Ironstone and a touch of Marzipan. The doors still looked a little stark to me so I waxed them with a tinted wax that I had from the kitchen project which was clear wax mixed with Old Ochre and thinned out a bit with water.
You see the green shelves? These are actually vertical shelves that I placed sideways, painted and wrote a post about it called ‘styling tips for console tables’ a couple of years ago. I placed the wooden bowl on the shelves initially but now it’s in the living room.
A friend commented that the lighter color on the walls made our ceiling look higher, and even though we’ve always had the small window there, she had never noticed it before, but now she noticed it right away.
This is SUCH a difficult area to photograph, but trust me, it looks great!
The vent cover was black, which I thought would be fine since we have some black accents, but a vent in a room is like my muffin top…I know it’s there but it’s not exactly a feature I want to show off, so I spray painted it white.
Ideally I would have liked a softer white but it is what it is and I’m ok with it.
That’s it for the hallway. I promise. I also painted the wall behind the piano bar and sofa in the living room, so I can’t promise I won’t show you those at some point :).
As always, sharing is caring, so don’t forget to Pin It!

Doreen- I have a bowl like that and have it for about a hundred years. I just oiled mine so don’t think I will paint it yet. lol
That hall looks GREAT. I think it looks a lot bigger than it did before you painted it…and the room looks ‘taller.
Love the reflection of the snowshoes on the wall…it does look like a painting- xo Diana

Doreen, When we are up North we live not too far from you, just over the VT border(7miles) in Greenwich, NY. We have a brick, 1 room, 200 yr old school house.
We just left the school, right after the Oct snow storm and arrived here on the Treasure Coast of FL for the Winter. My heart really tugged at me as we were leaving but the Palm trees and warm weather are oh so fine. Love your blog! Bev Martin, Bunker Hill School,Cossayuna, NY. ,

That hallway really does look great, Doreen, and your comment on the muffin top – lol- I can relate, and yes, it looks better camouflaged. 😉
Your bowl looks good, especially how you styled it after painting. I’m not sure I’d have to nerve to paint such a pretty piece but, just like your hallway, your bravery paid off handsomely.
Have a great weekend!

Doreen the bowl is very nice. But the hallway is wow! That is one major transformation. I would not have believed it was the same space at all. Did you also change out the doors? It looks fantastic, so bright and fresh. I am very impressed.

Okay, only your creative brain could think of something like this! I wouldn’t have in a million years. I would think wood bowl – beautiful. You shall always be a plain wood bowl. But yay Doreen brain- love the transformation!!
And I absolutely LOVE your hallway transformation too!! Just beautiful and a true improvement in my opinion. I bet it makes that area feel so much more airy and open. However, I need to remember that you are going to interject things (like your muffin top) and I should not be drinking things at the time – cue spit take!
Lesson learned….I’ll just stay away from liquids when reading your posts. Goof ball. I heard that – no YOU are!! 😛
Have a blessed Thanksgiving ahead Babes!! xoxo

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving! Hugs, Kimberley

The bowl is fabulous, Doreen! It looks like a very fancy piece one might see in a gallery/art store. And the hallway — I just love it’s transformation! You put a lot of work into it, and I bet it makes you smile every time you walk through it!

Doreen, that wooden bowl looks so cool now, what a clever idea. I like the gold streaks in the bowl. I think the white pain adds a nice touch, and the gold makes it look Christmassy. Your hallway looks very light and charming now. You did a wonderful job, Doreen.
Have a very nice Thanksgiving.

Hi Doreen, I am so far behind with blogging and sorry for getting here so late, but I am here friend. The bowl looks great and I like that you added another stripe.
The back hallway, WOW, what a change. The change made it so much brighter and gives it a more open feel. Love the ceiling being left natural too. I think the vent cover blends it well now.
Hope you and Fisherman are well.

I’m not fed up with your hallway stories at all! I love seeing how you’re transforming your cabin, keeping the spirit of it, but adding your very own touch to it. Brilliant!
