I decided to bring this post out of the archives since I’ve noticed quite a few pins happening with not just my gingerbread houses, but others as well, so I’m thinking maybe there’s some interest in making these. This house was made last year for Christmas 2012. If you go here, you can see the other houses that we made starting with 2009. It’s fun to see how far our grandson progressed with his gingerbread skills!
For the last five years, our Grandson and I have gotten together a few weeks before Christmas to make a Gingerbread House. For the first two years, we took a workshop being offered at a local restaurant, but I decided it would be more fun to pick out our own candy and make them on our own, and it was!
After the houses are finished, I order an acrylic box from ebay with which to store/display them in, and even the ones we made four years ago are still in great shape. I was going to show you all of them and the progression over the years, but they’re in our weekend home and I failed to take pictures the last time we were there. I will update this post and add them as soon as I can.
*Edited to add: Go here to see the other houses*
Here’s a quick look at this year’s house.
We typically get two houses. One we save, the other he takes home and eats if he wants to. This year, the kit came with a cute little train as well…and no, we didn’t eat them ;).
Making Gingerbread Houses is a nice tradition to do either with your children or grandchildren. If you have the space, saving them is a great idea.
I may be without internet for a few days (yikes!) as we are in the midst of moving. Happy Holidays to you all, and a very happy New Year!
*Remember…this is last year’s post! We’re NOT moving now* Whew!!

Doreen, these are so cute! I do love knowing that you do this with your grandson. My mother did that one year with my daughter and my niece and they loved it. My daughter grew up to make huge ones that would have equaled Martha Stewart’s.
I’m glad you won’t’ be without internet this year!

So Cute!!! A small café in my town has ‘build your own gingerbread house’ nights just before the holidays. People bring their kids and get a house that’s already built and then they decorate them with all the fixins provided by the café. You don’t have to make a mess at your own house & you get so many fixins to choose from. My friend and I go (both don’t have kids) and bring bottles of wine with us. All the mothers are jealous that we bring wine! Our husbands pick us up later and bring us and our gingerbread houses home. It’s an annual tradition for us.

OMG I always have high hopes of building gingerbread towns. My daughter and I built one a few years back and the whole thing kept falling apart! What did we do? Well, we made a tornado out of tin foil and turned it into the gingerbread tornado alley of course! I’ve got to find those pictures….

I can so picture that Andi! I learned the hard way to have the houses preassembled before my grandson got involved.
You MUST find those pictures!
