I truly believe the Berkshires is one of this country’s most beautiful areas. With abundant waterfalls, mountains, lakes and gorgeous vistas everywhere you turn, it might be easy to sometimes take it for granted.
But I don’t. Not for a minute.
We’ve owned our cabin for twelve years, three of those years we’ve been here full time, but we’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of all that our area has to offer.
I’m not a big hiker, but if there’s a waterfall as a reward, I’m in.
It was a gorgeous day when we decided to check out Campbell Falls, located in Sandisfield, Massachusetts. The walk to the Falls was fast and downhill all the way, making the walk back more rigorous, but definitely doable for almost anyone.
This was one outing where the trip to get there was even more lovely than the destination.
I want this mailbox.
I had made some sandwiches, so after our hike, we stopped for lunch at York Lake, also in Sandisfield.
On our way home we saw this adorable baby fox.
I guess that’s why our street is called Fox Den Rd. :).
In other news…
Thank you all for the kind and helpful comments and emails on my last post. In case you’re wondering, I’m still having an illicit affair with my sewing machine. It’s quite strange actually, as I really prefer the tall, dark and handsome type, but they don’t make bags so I’ve moved on. ;). I’m currently making a beach bag from an old tablecloth, which I hope to show you next time if I don’t screw it up. I do that. A LOT. But I’m getting better. (Better at using my seam ripper that is). The most rewarding part of this process is finding ways to use items in different ways. I want to line some bags with water resistant fabric but I don’t necessarily want to pay retail prices, so I’ve thought about using shower curtains and/or liners. It worked as curtains for our porch, so why not? Or how about old raincoat fabric? I also have two dresses I bought from Sahalie (great company!) many years ago that are water resistant which I was going to donate, but I’m thinking of cutting them up and using them as liners instead. Truly, the possibilities are endless, and that’s the fun part. Well, that and the part when I turn the bag right side out and realize, hey, I didn’t mess this one up! Whooohoooo!!

What a beautiful area you live in! That looks like a great place to relax and take in the scenery. I love the waterfalls!

Beautiful area, Doreen. I love your spirit, both outdoors and with domesticated hobbies. 🙂 I am quite familiar with the old seam ripper myself. I picked up sewing again just recently, after a decades-long hiatus, and as soon as I turned an item right-side out and realized what I had done, I said, “well, hello old friend” (to the seam ripper). Have a great weekend.

I was so burned out with sewing after my kids and then grandkids finally grew out of “homemade” clothing – pajamas, drawstring pants, Halloween costumes, summer shorts and tops, etc – and the money-saving draperies, bedspreads, slipcovers, tablecloths, napkins, etc – that I put my machine away and haven’t touched it in decades also. I’m afraid I wouldn’t know how to sew anymore but you’ve given me the inspiration to MAYBE get it out and try again. I bought a new tabletop machine a few years ago but it has resided in the closet, unused. Hmmm, I could use some new pajamas, myself ….. 🙂

New York State is such a beautiful state as you have shown us here, and why I will probably never leave it! The thing I remember the most about being in the Berkshire’s in the Fall were the gorgeous pastel pink and purple leaves. My earring, of the same colors, lies still somewhere in those woods! I want that little fox for a pet….how cute is he!?

Hi Doreen! Wow! What a gorgeous place! The waterfall, lake, green pines––beautiful. Foxes are on the endangered list, so I was so happy to see the cute little fellow. Great post!

Oh boy. Hold on a sec while I pick up my jaw off the floor. Oy, my back! What can I say? The Berkshires are one of the most beautiful place I have ever seen on this laptop screen and your pics today definitely do it justice! From the waterfall perk to the pretty farmland and baby fox, your hood is a little pastoral haven, my friend.
You are so resourceful, thinking about recycling those waterproof fabrics for your beach bag lining! Can’t wait to see it!

What a beautiful waterfall and country side. That looked like the perfect place to have a picnic. We love this area of NC for the same reason, all of the waterfalls, lakes and parks.

What beautiful countryside. I am a lover of old barns/farms and sheds. Such structures have a history of unique stories. The waterfall is in such a serene setting. I could sit there for the longest time to listen to the trickle and collect my thoughts. Enjoy your peaceful surroundings and have a wonderful weekend.

Doreen, these photos are stunning! I can almost imagine sitting at the lake eating lunch – that in and of itself would be a perfect day, but the waterfalls, the barn, the FOX! Sign me up! Looking forward to seeing some of your finished sewing projects!

You have a love a nature so similar to mine…I’m not a hiker, although I’d like to be if I could get my asthma under control. Ah, excuses. I’m very lazy. But what a great way to get exercise and see a beautiful waterfall. You really have a paradise here.
The country roads and barns…just what I so love here by the lake and the woods. Your pics are so pretty, Doreen. And the fox! Wow, I’ve never seen one and very few pictures but aren’t they darling?
Great to catch a post…I’m drowning in obligations. Save me!

Good Sunday Afternoon My Friend!
This is where I need to move! Your panoramic views and wildlife are beyond gorgeous and they make me long for hiking and cool waterfalls. How cool was it to see this darling little fox!
I just came in from frying in my garden…the recent downpours-literally drowned half of my garden and now it’s dry and hot! Oh the woes of a farmer…

Stunning photos Doreen! You live in such a beautiful area. Of course anything that is not in the city is really gorgeous up there.
And as for taking your dresses apart and turning them into bags, by all means, you can join the rest of us repurposers. Everytime I see a pretty pattern I hoard it and now I’ve got a box full of clothes that I’ve kept just cause they are pretty. I understand perfectly!

Oh Doreen, your post hit home for me, cause there’s nothing I like more than taking a drive in the country. This is a beautiful area, and you got some wonderful photos. The waterfall, the barns, the grand trees, and the lake…..all make it such a charming place in the country. And that baby fox, how cute is he? I can see why you named your blog after this fellow hehehe.
Thanks for taking me along visiting the countryside, and many happy July days to you.

Your photos are always so beautiful, Doreen. I love that sweet fox…and that waterfall!! How do I get one of those?? 😉

How lucky for you to catch the fox for a picture! He made me think of Brother Fox in the Isabel Dalhousie mysteries. A waterfall really does something to me too, Doreen. That one is pretty awesome. I hope you do take time to revisit all your favorite places. When we moved to FL we were so busy packing and getting ready to leave the business in our sons’ hands that we did not go anywhere and I regretted it so much later. And of course now that we’re back here we’ve been too busy to see much. My sister and I have all sorts of touristy things planned when fall comes with cooler weather.
What you need to get across to potential buyers is that they are not just buying a house, they are buying a location that people travel thousands of miles to see, all in their backyard, so to speak. Priceless!

I love your sewing you have been doing.

Doreen, I wish I saw more sunsets, but since I’m a morning person, I often see the sunrises.
I hope you are enjoying these summer days. It was 106 here, but the last couple of days have been cooler.

Doreen,
I agree, you do live in the most beautiful place!!! My husband and I love the area and used to get there fairly frequently….I think I told you that we stayed at Mt Greylock some yrs ago for a rustic weekend and had a ball….we really want to go back. We had a delicious dinner with wine, some nice hiking and what a beautiful view! Hopefully life will settle a bit so we can back to some of our favorite places! I love that you are sharing your fascination with the sewing machine with us! Your bags are darling! Hugs,
Linda

Such a gorgeous drive you have taken us on, Doreen! Love the weathered barns, the trucks full of hay, the beautiful lakes and that sweet little fox is really the icing on the cake! I just love this time of year when everything is green and the wildflowers line the roadsides. I laughed when you said you were thinking of cutting up your dresses for purse linings. You have the sickness, for sure, the ‘sewing bug’! I’ve bought dresses from that company – Sahalie – and love them, but now they are out of style, so maybe I’ll cut up mine, too! haha! They would make great pillows. Happy sewing, and enjoy these lovely summer days while they last! Hugs xo Karen
